Let me state a fact for you: Couples massage is one of the best ways to stimulate intimacy in a relationship.
Couples massage can be a lot of things – it’s a way to ease into massage for the first time; it’s a way to reconnect with a friend or relative you haven’t seen in a while.
Most famously, however – and for good reason – couples massage is a great way to experience intimacy with a partner in a romantic relationship.
The entire purpose of a couples style massage– a massage where two people are simultaneously massaged, in the same room, by two different massage therapists – is to experience the process of massage together. Couples massage, in the most simple definition, is about togetherness.
The intimate emotions of togetherness are stimulated for a few reasons during couples massage:
• Studies have shown that massage increases oxytocin levels– yes, that oxytocin, also known as the love hormone. If you go and your partner both receive a massage at the same time and both experience an increase in oxytocin, you’ll likely both be feeling a bit more loving at the end.
• It’s well recognized that doing new things together is a great way to keep a relationship exciting! For many people, couples massage is pretty new. The adrenaline of doing something new with the person you love will only increase the feelings of closeness that the massage itself will be fostering.
• If you or your partner are somewhat nervous about the idea of couples massage, having your loved one close by can make the entire process more comfortable and even increase the sense of trust between the two of you.
Put all of this together, and I’m sure the feelings of intimacy will carry on far beyond the massage therapist’s office!
Couples massage is all about experiencing the personal, hands on exercise of massage as a team. But remember, that doesn’t mean you have to go through the entire process together! One of you may prefer a full body relaxation massage, the other may want sports massage therapy. One might focus on massaging previous injuries while the other focuses on injury prevention.
The actual types of massage that you and your partner receive doesn’t matter so much as the fact that you’re experiencing the practice of massage together.
Couples massage, like so many things in your relationship, is about the beauty of doing things together.
